BWA holds historic meeting in Cuba; leaders meet Castro

___HAVANA (BP)--World Baptist leaders spoke with Cuban President Fidel Castro in a two-hour private meeting one day after Baptist World Alliance General Council members adopted a resolution encouraging "initiatives to ease sanctions on food and medicine affecting the people of Cuba."
___The meeting with Castro came on the final day of the BWA's July 3-8 General Council meeting in Havana.

Hale Center churches cooperate in fast-growing community ministry

___HALE CENTER--Tillie Burgin came to Hale Center with a simple message that has exploded in ministry.
___"Begin by finding one person with a need and trying to meet that need," the well-known director of Mission Arlington told a group of Christians in the Panhandle town, located near Plainview.
___The result was creation of Mission Hale Center, a community-wide effort to minister to those in need.

Some question whether words put back in BF&M mean the same thing

___The words are back, but is the meaning the same?
___At least two Baptist editors believe the last-minute insertion of the words "priesthood of believers" and "soul competency" into the 2000 version of the Baptist Faith & Message employs similar language as before but with different meaning.
___The two phrases were added to the faith statement's new preamble less than an hour before messengers to the Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting in Orlando, Fla., adopted the document.

Kentucky children's home resolves conflict for now

___FRANKFORT, Ky.--Just when it looked as though Kentucky Baptist Homes for Children's contract with the state would expire, uprooting children and forcing massive layoffs, a call from the governor initiated a reprieve until both sides can reach an agreement.
___Earlier this year, state officials speculated that the contract with KBHC, the largest private provider of child care in Kentucky, might not be renewed because of KBHC's policy that bars homosexuals from employment. The agency's firing of a lesbian worker has landed it and two state cabinets that contract with KBHC in a federal lawsuit.
