Wayland offers
new master's for ministry
___PLAINVIEW--Wayland Baptist University will offer a new Christian ministry track for the master of religion degree this fall at his main campus in Plainview as well as through centers in Lubbock and San Antonio.
___The degree is designed as an alternative to a traditional seminary degree for pastors and others in local church ministry.
___The target group for the degree, according to Philosophy and Religion Division Chairman Fred Meeks, is pastors and other church staff members already in ministerial service.
___The master's track will appeal to non-traditional students who "find it much more realistic to take a more brief degree," Meeks predicted. Likewise, it will appeal to traditional students whose ministry goals require completing a master's degree quickly.
___Candidates for the new degree must have completed an accredited undergraduate degree and two prerequisite courses--Old Testament and New Testament histories or their equivalent.
___The master of religion degree in the Christian ministry track is a 36-hour program, compared to 92 hours for the traditional master of divinity degree offered by most seminaries.
___Students may focus on areas such as preaching, evangelism, church administration or youth ministry.
