___The university art department originally designed, created and painted the 22,200-square-foot mural in 1988 at the request of the Corps of Engineers for $2,000.
___According to university art professor Hershall Seals, the original project took several months to complete, but the restoration will be quicker and will cost more than the original painting 12 years ago.
___"The first mural had to be designed, drawn out and painted," he explained. "This year the Corps has asked us to restore the original to be more vibrant in color. So our task is only taking a few weeks, but our bid was for $9,000."
___The mural is a pictorial history of Bell County, including scenes of Fort Hood, historical homes, hospitals, the Chisolm Trail and covered wagons, downtown Belton and Lake Belton.
___"It's almost like a giant coloring book," Seals said. "We're just filling in the spaces--with over 22,000 square feet of bright paint."
