Around the state
___bluebull Mount Lebanon Encampment in Cedar Hill will be the site of a Special Friends retreat Oct. 6-7. The retreat is for the mentally disabled 12 years old or older, their parents and chaperones and workers with the mentally disabled. Campers will have Bible study, recreation, crafts and a talent show, and conferences will be held for parents and teachers.

FIRST CHURCH IN MEXIA held a ribbon-cutting ceremony recently for its Christian Life Center. Officiating were Robbie Boyd, minister of youth; Jack Ballard, minister of senior adults and activities; Velda Ayers, building committee member; Mark Wilson, minister of music; and Pastor Marcus Sheffield.

___bluebull Cottonwood Church in Glen Rose will celebrate its 125th anniversary Aug. 19-20. A salad dinner and a concert by Double Portion will be held Saturday evening. Bill Pinson, former executive director of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, will be the guest speaker Sunday morning. John Allen is pastor.
___bluebull Bethesda Church in Burleson will celebrate its 145th anniversary Aug. 20. Bill Roe, retired director of missions of Johnson Association, will preach. A meal will follow. Craig Vire is pastor.

___bluebull Darrell Robinson as special assistant to the vice president of evangelism of the North American Mission Board. A celebration is slated for Sept. 23 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Springhill Memorial Hospital Conference Center in Mobile, Ala. Robinson formerly was pastor of Midway Church in Big Spring, Berea Church in Big Spring, Hillcrest Church in Amarillo, First Church in Vernon and First Church in Pasadena.

___Deaths
___bluebull T.O. Upshaw, 78, Aug. 6 in Colorado City. Upshaw was pastor of churches in Hobbs, Lefors and Pampa, and was senior adult minister and interim pastor of First Church in Snyder. He also was director of missions for Double Mountain Area for 17 years. Upshaw served on the Executive Board of the Baptist General Convention of Texas and on the board of High Plains Baptist Hospital in Amarillo. He also was founder of the Church Builders of Texas, and led construction of 47 buildings and churches from 1971 to 1997. He is survived by his wife, Georgie; son, Freddy; daughters, Kay Pittman and Karen Johnson; sister, Wilda Mize; brother, Preston; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Shirley Jo.
___bluebull Joe Stevens, July 13. Stevens was pastor of Mosheim Church in Valley Mills. He is survived by his wife, Doris; and sons, James and Tim.
