FAMILY MATTERS:
End-of-life issues should be discussed
___My husband and I have begun to talk about what we want done when we no longer can make decisions about our own care. This is so hard to think about. Are there any resources to help us make these decisions?

___You are absolutely right: This is hard to think about. Certainly one of the most important things one can do is pray about this issue.
___It is important, though, that you communicate wishes about medical treatment you may need if you are unable to make your wishes known.
___Families left with uncertain knowledge of a person's wishes in this area often find themselves in conflict. A sense of unity can be something from which the family can draw strength and comfort.
___Decisions about what we want at the end of our lives often are based on religious, legal and cultural concerns. Or, stated another way, what is consistent with our faith, the laws in the state in which we live, and our society and family beliefs.
___When making decisions about what you want at the end of your life, consider that medical decisions should be individualized to your unique medical condition.
___Also, you will want to consider the burdens, risks and benefits of various treatments. In particular, you may consider what burdens or hardships of treatment you would be willing to accept for a particular amount of benefit obtained if you were seriously ill or injured.
___Please consider and discuss with your family and physician the completion of a directive to physicians and family or surrogates, a medical power of attorney and an out-of-hospital do-not-resuscitate order. These forms are available from many physicians' offices or from hospital or retirement community social services' departments and do not necessarily require an attorney to draft for you.
___Another good resource will air on public television in September. Bill Moyers has produced a documentary titled "On Our Own Terms." Issues around the end of life will be presented. This might be helpful for you and your family to watch together. Much good discussion could be generated from the topics addressed.
___As Christians, it is affirming to know that our bodies may wither and die, but our souls will find rest with our Lord. Planning for a transition from this world to the next is an important issue for all of us.
