Wayland converts to university
system with Wallace as chancellor
___PLAINVIEW--Trustees of Wayland Baptist University adopted an administrative reorganization July 27 that creates a university system headed by a chancellor.
___Current university President Wallace Davis was named chancellor, and the board launched a search for a new president to oversee the Plainview campus.
___Wayland operates additional campuses in Amarillo; Lubbock; Wichita Falls; San Antonio; Phoenix and Fort Huachuca, Ariz.; Albuquerque and Clovis, N.M.; Anchorage and Fairbanks, Alaska; and Honolulu, Hawaii.
___Many of these campuses have experienced strong growth in recent years, especially the San Antonio campus. Enrollment there was 1,300 last year and is projected to reach 2,500 by 2007.
___The San Antonio campus has now outpaced the Plainview campus in enrollment. The Plainview campus last year had an enrollment of 1,150. Three other external campuses each have enrollments nearing 600 students.
___"Wayland has enjoyed outstanding growth over the recent years and has been considering the possibility for over two years of administrative restructuring," explained Mark Murdock of Lubbock, chairman of the board of trustees. "After considering a number of options, the board has made a decision to move to a Wayland Baptist University system."
___Davis compared the new structure to the Texas A&M system. The chancellor's position is not an honorary position or a role of semi-retirement, he said, but instead is an administrative chancellor's position.
___The new plan will realign some departments within the university's administration to streamline their work. A vice president for enrollment management will be added to oversee student services, admissions, retention, financial aid and property maintenance.
___As chancellor, Davis will report directly to the board of trustees and will be responsible for the operation of the university system. The new president will be responsible primarily for Wayland's Plainview campus and its operations. A vice chancellor, current Provost Bill Hardage, will oversee the system's external campuses. Each external campus is managed by a full-time director.
