Texas Tidbits
___ Gates Hall gets facelift. Wayland Baptist University's central building, Gates Hall, received a facelift to its third floor recently after nearly 20 years of vacancy. The third floor now houses the chancellor's suite, offices for the social sciences division and a few classrooms.
___ Newsweek lauds Baylor. Baylor University has been recognized by the Kaplan/Newsweek College Catalog 2001 as a top choice among universities that high school guidance counselors would attend if they could repeat their college years. The book is published annually as a joint venture between Newsweek and Kaplan, a provider of educational and career services.
___ HBU plans reunion luncheon. Houston Baptist University's auxiliary organization will hold its second annual reunion luncheon Sept. 25 on campus. Featured speaker will be Marge Caldwell, an inspirational speaker and author. Tickets are $10 each, and reservations should be made by Sept. 15 by writing to Marjorie Harden, Houston Baptist University, 7502 Fondren, Houston 77074.
___ DBU students offer helping hands. Before they began their first college classes, freshmen at Dallas Baptist University fanned out across the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex Aug. 18 to participate in service projects alongside upperclassmen. About 250 students helped build a Habitat for Humanity house, sorted clothing for the homeless, helped renovate a building for a crisis pregnancy center, threw an after-school party for children at an inner-city ministry center and distributed food to needy families.
___ James at HBU. Kay Cole James, senior fellow for the Citizenship Project of the Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C., will speak at Houston Baptist University Sept. 21. A former dean of the School of Government at Regent University, she also served in the Bush and Reagan administrations. She will speak in Sharp Gymnasium at 10:10 a.m. and then will participate in a panel discussion at 7:45 p.m. in M.D. Anderson Student Center. Both events are free.
___ Resolutions sought. Messengers to the Baptist General Convention of Texas annual session who plan to present resolutions are encouraged to submit them to the resolutions committee in writing before the Oct. 30-31 meeting in Corpus Christi. Committee Chairman Dan Malone said advance notice will allow the committee to more fully consider proposed resolutions. Proposed resolutions may be mailed to Malone at Malone Law Firm, 300 E. Main Suite 1100, El Paso 79901.
___ Correction: A news brief in the Aug. 7 issue contained incorrect information about Crestwood Baptist Church of Lumberton. The congregation is not among the four churches that have formed the new Southern Baptists of Southeast Texas Association, an association formed to relate to the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention. Pastor Larry Staggs clarified that although the new association held its first public meeting at Crestwood, the church "has no plans at this time" to join the association.
