Key Church strategy gets new ingredients to increase appeal

___Jim Burgin may well be the Emeril Lagasse of Texas Baptists.
___Lagasse is the New Orleans restaurateur who hosts a Food TV cooking show and is "Good Morning America's" chef-in-residence. He tosses a bit of Cajun spice into whatever he's cooking and shouts: "Bam! Let's kick it up a notch."
___Not that Burgin is flamboyant. He isn't. He is certainly not a chef of renown. His only culinary specialty--he says--is a bologna sandwich on white bread.
___It's just that he has taken the Key Church program of the Baptist General Convention and kicked it up a notch.

Survey finds NIV top pick
___PHOENIX (ABP)--The New International Version is the most popular Bible translation among Protestant ministers, according to a new nationwide survey.
___In a poll of more than 500 pastors of Protestant churches, 34 percent said they are most likely to rely on the NIV in their work. The traditional King James Version was favored by 24 percent, followed by the New Revised Standard Version (17 percent), the New King James Version (10 percent) and the New American Standard Version (9 percent).

Semple announces retirement date

___DALLAS--After serving 12 years as director of the Texas Baptist State Missions Commission, James Semple has announced his plans to retire effective Feb. 1.
___Semple, 69, notified the 18-member commission of his plans at its Aug. 24 meeting in Dallas. The commission responded by passing a resolution of appreciation for Semple.

Newport called friend and scholar

___FORT WORTH--Colleagues remembered John Newport as a gracious bridge-builder, renowned scholar and effective apologist for the Christian faith at his memorial service Aug. 21.
___Newport, former vice president for academic affairs and provost at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, died Aug. 18 of complications from a stroke he suffered in June. He was 83.
