UMHB names church relations director. The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor has named Bill Muske director of church relations. He has been pastor of Parkway Baptist Church in College Station since 1994 and previously served on the staffs of Willow Park Baptist Church in Houston and Metropolitan Baptist Church in Houston.

Spurger takes new position. Sonny Spurger, associate director of the Texas Baptist Mission Service Corps, has been named associate coordinator of the Baptist General Convention of Texas minister/church relations department. He replaces Jan Daehnert, who became coordinator when Dick Maples was appointed associate executive director. Prior to joining the BGCT in 1999, Spurger served 10 years as pastor of Crossroads Baptist Church in Lancaster.

Relief unit wraps up work in Throckmorton. A Texas Baptist Men feeding unit wrapped up its work in Throckmorton and returned home July 26. Twenty-eight Baptists from 12 churches fed volunteer workers on a water pipeline project. The town of Throckmorton, northeast of Abilene, is suffering from the current drought and is expected to run out of water in less than two months. The pipeline will bring water from nearby Graham. A relief unit from the Wichita Falls area prepared lunch and dinner for 11 days. It served up to 268 people per meal.

Association formed. A new association of churches has been formed in Southeast Texas, called the Southern Baptists of Southeast Texas Association. This association works with the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention rather than the Baptist General Convention of Texas. A report in the Beaumont Enterprise said the new association began with four churches, including Crestwood Baptist Church of Lumberton and Ridgewood Baptist Church of Port Arthur.

Truett professor wins award. A book written by Roger Olson, professor of theology at Baylor University's Truett Seminary, has been awarded the Gold Medallion for best theology/doctrine book of the year by the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association. The volume is titled "The Story of Christian Theology: Twenty Centuries of Tradition and Reform." Earlier it was cited by Christianity Today as the best book of the year in theology and ethics.
