Howard Payne honors alumni. Howard Payne University will honor 14 alumni during homecoming Oct. 13-14. Gerald Smith of Corpus Christi and Roxann Moore of Coaldale, Colo., will be named distinguished alumni; the medal of service will be given to Rudy Camacho of Fort Worth, Gary Elliston of Dallas, James McGlothlin of Dallas, Robert Smith of Brownwood and Robbie Wiley Zunker of San Marcos; the Outstanding Young Graduate award will be given to Jeremy Denning of Houston; Maritia Leath of Houston will be named Coming Home Queen; John David Robnett will be named posthumously to receive the President's Heritage Award; and Dobie Craig of El Campo, Bill Stovall (posthumous), Becky Wells of Dallas and Albert Wilson of Killeen will be inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame.

Foundation promotes, adds staff. Joyce Bagley has been named senior vice president and chief operating officer of the Baptist Foundation of Texas. She has worked with the Baptist General Convention of Texas agency since 1989. Also, Jeff Smith has rejoined the Foundation's staff as vice president and trust counsel.

Baylor students set 100 percent rate. One hundred percent of the Baylor University students who took the 1999 American Social Work Boards passed the licensing exam. That compares to a national passing rate of 79 percent. Passing the exam is required to receive a bachelor's degree in social work. With the addition of a new master's program in social work, Baylor is becoming one of the primary trainers of social workers in Texas Baptist ministries.

Child care offered at BGCT. Free child care will be provided as a service to out-of-town messengers to the Baptist General Convention of Texas annual session Oct. 30-31 in Corpus Christi. Child care will be located at First Baptist Church, about 10 minutes from the convention center. Advance registration is required by Oct. 16 by calling (361) 643-6506.

HBU offers worldview conference. Houston Baptist University will be the site of a Christian Worldview Conference sponsored by the Wilberforce Forum and hosted by Congressman Tom DeLay Sept. 23. Speakers include Chuck Colson, founder of Prison Fellowship; Kay Cole James, senior fellow with the Heritage Foundation; William Dembski, senior fellow with the Discovery Institute; Roberto Rivera of the Wilberforce Forum; Read Schuchardt, founder of Cleave, the Counter Agency; and Rick Scarborough, pastor of First Baptist Church of Pearland. Correction: A story on Baptist associations in the Aug. 28 Standard incorrectly stated that churches in Henderson Baptist Association must affirm the 2000 version of the Baptist Faith & Message. The association itself has affirmed the updated doctrinal statement but does not require member churches to do so.
