___bluebull HPU announces homecoming honorees. Howard Payne University will honor graduates and friends during its Homecoming alumni banquet Oct. 19. This year's recipients of the distinguished alumni award are Jerry English of Lynchburg, Va., and Dale McTaggart of Houston. Medal of Service honorees are Mary Price of Waxahachie, Charles Clary of Arlington, Gladys Swindle of Killeen, Verdell Davis of Dallas, Tom Ruane of Dallas and Bernardo Moraga of Albuquerque, N.M. Recipient of the Outstanding Young Graduate Award is Keith Telg of France, and the Coming Home Queen is Jane Lacey of Goldthwaite. The grand marshal is Mamie McCullough of Dallas, and the recipient of the Jose Rivas Distinguished Service Award is Juan Andrade of Chicago. Sports Hall of Fame honorees are Ed Nixon of Bullard, Charles White of Hilltop Lakes, Damon Miller of Austin and Jeff Neal of Corinth. The university also will present its President's Heritage Award to Noah Byars posthumously.
___bluebull Estate benefits Wayland. Ralph and Elizabeth Shannon never attended Wayland Baptist University, but their strong belief in Christian education led them to leave a gift that will benefit students at Wayland for years to come. The Shannons left $206,000 to Wayland in their estate to create an endowed scholarship for any student with financial need. The couple were active member of First Baptist Church of Halfway before their deaths.
___bluebull Truett plans dinner. The annual dinner for alumni and friends of Baylor University's Truett Theological Seminary will be held at 5:15 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29, at the Adams Mark Hotel in Dallas. Guest speaker will be evangelist Richard Jackson of Brownwood. Tickets are $20 each and must be ordered in advance by writing to Friends of Truett Dinner, Box 97126, Waco 76798-7126.
___bluebull Southwestern plans luncheon. The Texas alumni association of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary will hold its annual meeting at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, at the Dallas Convention Center. Tickets for the luncheon are $15 and should be purchased in advance by writing to Alumni Relations, Southwestern Seminary, Box 22480, Fort Worth 76122.
___bluebull Point of Grace and FFH to sing. Lake Pointe Baptist Church in Rockwall will host an Oct. 26 concert by Point of Grace, with guests FFH. Tickets for the 7 p.m. concert are $21.50 in advance or $23.50 at the door and may be purchased at iTickets.com or by calling (800) 791-3309.
___bluebull Collins lecture set. John Wilson, professor of religion at Pepperdine University, will give the A.O. Collins Theology Lectures at Houston Baptist University Oct. 18-19. Wilson also is director of the Banias Archaeological Project, an effort to excavate the biblical city of Caesarea Philippi. He will speak at 8 p.m. Oct. 18 and 9:30 a.m. Oct. 19. Both lectures are in the university's Mabee Theater.
___bluebull Linam named provost. Dallas Baptist University has named Gail Linam provost. A university employee since 1989, she most recently has been vice president for undergraduate affairs and academic dean.
___bluebull Correction. A caption on a front-page photos in last week's paper was incorrect. The teenage girl shown participating in a See You at the Pole event at Kaufman High School is not Andrea Crowell as stated but Erica Underwood.
