___bluebull David Melton, director of undergraduate admissions, and Maydene Wells, director of cashiers, were recognized as the outstanding staff members at Houston Baptist University recently.
___bluebull Victor Carrillo, assistant professor of political science and director of legal studies at Hardin-Simmons University, has been chosen by Taylor County Commissioners as the next Taylor County judge. He had been serving as an Abilene city councilman.
___bluebull Howard Payne University has announced its new faculty appointments. Evelyn Romig, former head of the university's English department , has been named dean of the School of Humanities. Donna Burney succeeds Romig as head of the English department. New faculty members are Rick Beelby, associate professor of exercise and sports science; Pamela Bryant, assistant professor of chemistry; Monte Garrett, instructor of music and director of choral activities; Dennis Horton, associate professor of Christian studies; and Russell Wilson, instructor of exercise and sports science and assistant athletic trainer.
___bluebull Reagan Ramsower has been appointed dean of libraries at Baylor University. He will continue in his role as associate vice president and chief information officer, as well as professor of information systems.
___bluebull Ronald Prevost, professor of church ministry and coordinator of special academic programs at Hardin-Simmons University, has agreed to serve a five-year term as a trustee of the Moscow Theological Seminary. The seminary trains ministers for leadership in a union of 1,400 Baptist churches in Russia.
___bluebull Bernard Scherr, assistant professor of music and head of the theory and composition department for Hardin-Simmons University's School of Music, recently won the University of Oregon's 125th Anniversary Composition Commission. The piece will be performed by the faculty brass quintet at the Oregon university's convocation Nov. 2. Scherr also was commissioned by HSU to compose a piece for the recent inauguration of Craig Turner as the university's president.
___bluebull Dale Peacock, a student at Houston Baptist University, recently was presented the President's Award for Excellence in Student Journalism by Baptist Press.

___bluebull Bethel Heights Church in Gatesville, 115th, Oct. 21. The day will include the dedication of a historical marker at 2 p.m. Former pastor Jeff Meyers will be the guest speaker.
___bluebull Valley View Church in Longview, 60th, Nov. 3-4. A fellowship will be held Saturday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday will include special recognitions during the morning service, a luncheon and an afternoon program. Former pastor Jim Barksdale will be the guest speaker and Mildred Barksdale the featured soloist.

___Retiring
___bluebull Moises Perales, Sept. 23, as pastor of Iglesia Emmauel in Bridgeport. He had been pastor of the church since 1968.

___Deaths
___bluebull Bennie Smith, 90, Sept. 27 in Duncan, Okla. He was pastor of churches in Oklahoma, Texas, Arizona and Hawaii and served served churches as interim pastor before retiring at age 84. His wife, Hazel, died eight days later on Oct. 5.

___bluebull Jim Durdin to the ministry at Central Church in Port Arthur. He is pastor at Woodcrest Church in Groves.
___bluebull Jason Sikes and Bud Walters as deacons at Andice Church in Andice.
