Schwarzkopf speaks at HBU Excellence Gala
___HOUSTON--More than 730 friends of Houston Baptist University heard Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf address HBU's Spirit of Excellence Gala last week.
___Sponsored by the President's Development Council of HBU, the event grossed more than $575,000 dedicated to the renovation of the university's Mabee Teaching Theater.
___Receiving the Spirit of Excellence Award, the highest tribute given by HBU, were

WHILE AT HBU, Norman Schwarzkopf posed with Jeffry Quiett, Faculty Assembly president; Zahra Jivani, Student Government Association president; and Billy Bernhard and Tameka Survillion, co-presidents of the Ministry Leadership Council.
Eleanor McCollum, the Robert and Janice McNair Foundation and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Honorary chairpersons were Archie and Linda Dunham; gala co-chairs were Jim and Sherry Smith and Michael and Kim Stevens; and host committee co-chairs were Cheryl Thompson-Draper and Cindy Crane Garbs.
___In what could be characterized as an "elegantly patriotic" theme, Schwarzkopf delivered an address titled "Leadership in Difficult Times" and took part in a question-and-answer session.
___Also recognized at the Spirit of Excellence Gala were recipients of the Distinguished Alumnus Award: Ronald Ellis, president of California Baptist University, and Robert Beauchamp, president and CEO of BMC Software.
___Others honored included Meritorious Service Award recipients Robert M. Powell and Judi Vogel, Opal Goolsby Outstanding Teaching Award recipients Susan Cook, Randy Hatchett, Constantina Michalos and Joe Blair; and Mayfield Outstanding Staff Award recipients Loree Watson, Anthony Martin, Maydene Wells and David Melton.
