___ HSU to honor alumni. Nine graduates of Hardin-Simmons University will be honored during homecoming festivities Oct. 26-28. Jud and Linda Powell of Abilene will receive the Keeter Alumni Service Award. Both are active in First Baptist Church of Abilene. Distinguished Alumni Award recipients include Lynne Abney, Southern Baptist representative to Northern Africa and the Middle East; Max Arrell, veteran commissioner for the Texas Rehabilitation Commission in Austin; and Verney Sallee of Los Alamos, N.M., who spent 17 years with Alcon Laboratories, achieving distinction as a leader in

Sanford McDonnell, chairman emeritus of the McDonnell Douglas Corp. and a national proponent for the establishment of character education in public schools, addressed the importance of character building during a visit to Dallas Baptist University Oct. 5. McDonnell spoke to students during the morning chapel service and addressed the faculty, staff and guests at a luncheon given in his honor.

___ HSU announces scholarship funds. Hardin-Simmons University officials have announced creation of three new scholarship funds. The Earl and Eletha May Slaughter Memorial Scholarship will assist ministerial students or those preparing for Christian vocations. It was established by Mrs. Slaughter, who resides in San Angelo. The Hedges/Tiller Endowed Scholarship will benefit either graduate or undergraduate students who plan to enter some area of ministry. It was established by Eddie and Elaine Hedges of Sudan. The Debra Pearsons Endowed Memorial Scholarship will assist psychology majors. It was established through the estate of Pearsons, a 1992 graduate who last year died of leukemia.
___ HSU plans dinner. Alumni and friends of Hardin-Simmons University are invited to a dinner meeting at 5:15 p.m. Oct. 29 at the Dallas Convention Center. President Craig Turner will be the keynote speaker. Tickets are $13.50 if ordered in advance by calling (800) 460-3908.
____ Wayland plans dinner. Wayland Baptist University will hold its annual dinner for alumni and friends Oct. 29 at 5 p.m. at the Dallas Convention Center. The program includes presentations by Chancellor Wallace Davis and Christian recording artist Marvin Matthews, a Wayland graduate. ___ Reynolds and Sibley honored. The association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas honored Baylor University President Emeritus Herbert Reynolds and Texas State Sen. David Sibley for contributions to higher education. Reynolds received the organization's Founders Award. Sibley, a Baylor graduate who now sits on the university's board of regents, received the Legislative Champion Award.
___ Clarification: Pastors from Tarrant Baptist Association told the Baptist Standard that Arlington pastor Dwight McKissic reportedly had gone on a fishing trip with three leaders of the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention prior to the Sept. 25 Baptist General Convention of Texas Executive Board meeting, when he proposed the BGCT affirm biblical inerrancy. This was reported in the Oct. 8 paper. McKissic has since denied fishing with the SBTC leaders. When asked about his relationship with them before the story was published, he declined to comment.
