Southwestern elects provost ___FORT WORTH--A native Texan who has taught at Dallas Theological Seminary and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary has been elected executive vice president and provost at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. ___Craig Blaising, 52, a San Antonio native, was elected to the post by seminary trustees Oct. 16. He also was elected professor of theology. ___Since 1995, Blaising has been professor of Christian theology and associate vice president for doctoral studies at Southern Seminary. Both Southern and Southwestern are Southern Baptist Convention seminaries. ___For 15 years prior to his appointment at Southern, Blaising was professor of systematic theology and director of the doctor of philosophy program in theological studies at Dallas Theological Seminary. Dallas Seminary, not a Southern Baptist school, has been most widely known for its advocacy of an end-times theology known as premillennial dispensationalism. ___Blaising grew up in Trinity Baptist Church of San Antonio and also has ties to Hyde Park Baptist Church in Austin and First Baptist Church of Dallas, where he was a member while teaching at Dallas Theological Seminary. ___He earned the bachelor of science degree in engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, the master of theology and doctor of theology degrees from Dallas Theological Seminary and the doctor of philosophy degree from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. ___Blaising has a background in theology and patristic studies and has written widely in the field of eschatology. He dealt with this subject in his book "Progressive Dispensationalism" and as a contributor to "Three Views on the Millennium and Beyond." ___Southwestern President Ken Hemphill described Blaising as "a competent administrator who is both convictional and compassionate." ___Michael Dean, chairman of Southwestern's trustees and pastor of Travis Avenue Baptist Church in Fort Worth, called Blaising an "academic heavyweight" who will "further enhance the world-class faculty at Southwestern Seminary." ___Blaising fills the vice president's post left vacant by the retirement of Scotty Gray. The provost position had not been filled in recent years. ___
