Weatherford church 'bowled'
over by world hunger fund drive

___WEATHERFORD--Hundreds of rice bowl banks produced a huge pile of coins and cash to help feed the world's hungry at North Side Baptist Church in Weatherford.
___When the coins and cash were counted, more than $5,336 was raised for world hunger. The church's missions committee distributed small plastic banks in the shape of rice bowls Sept. 16. An in-gathering day was set for a month later, Oct. 14.
___The national tragedies of Sept. 11 only served to accentuate the need for giving to meet the needs of hungry people around the world, according to church leaders.
___On World Hunger Day, Oct. 14, both morning worship services saw the aisles filled with families coming to the altar table to place their rice bowls or offering envelopes into two large plastic tubs.
___Two year-old Madeline Dinkins brought in her second filled rice bowl. For more than three weeks, she had accompanied her mother and father to their places of work and other venues, always asking people to donate to her rice bowl to help her feed hungry people. Her efforts were typical of many in the congregation who donated their coin collections or gold dollars and made other cash gifts.
___"Our church has responded in a wonderful way to the challenge to share something of our abundance with a world of want and need," said Pastor Van Houser.
