___ Howard Payne at 20-year high. Howard Payne University's fall enrollment of 1,506 is the highest in more than 20 years. This figure includes students enrolled on the main campus in Brownwood and at extension sites across Texas. For the first time since 1991, the university's three residence halls are at full capacity. "We are encouraged by the continued growth at Howard Payne," said President Rick Gregory. "We look forward to an exciting year as we strive to strengthen our academic programs and the overall residential experience for our students."
___ Karon speech cancelled. Jan Karon, author of the best-selling Mitford series of books, has canceled her Oct. 18 visit to Baylor University, as well as all appearances in Texas, due to the nation's current crisis. Karon had been scheduled as inaugural speaker in the Distinguished Author Lecture Series, benefiting the Baylor Libraries. ___ Fish leads ETBU revival. Roy Fish, distinguished professor of evangelism at Southwestern Bapist Theological Seminary, was the guest speaker at East Texas Baptist University's fall revival Sept.26-28.
___ Flores scholarship established. A scholarship established through the estate of former Hardin-Simmons University business professor Manuel Flores will endow a scholarship for undergraduate business students. The university recently received about $48,000 for the scholarship after Flores' death last year.
___ UMHB honors Bruce. Keith Bruce received the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Distinguished Service Medallion Sept. 28. Bruce is coordinator of institutional ministries for the Baptist General Convention of Texas.
___ Texas Historical Society to meet. The Texas Baptist Historical Society will hold its annual meeting Oct. 29 at 10 a.m. at the Baptist Building in Dallas. The luncheon meeting will include a presentation by Norman and Wilma Taylor of East Morristown, Ind., who will talk about the use of "chapel cars" on the railway. ___ Parchman Lectures slated. Baylor University's Truett Seminary will offer its annual Parchman Endowed Lectures Oct. 15-17, with three presentations by N.T. ___ Baylor offers Baptist website. Baylor University's Baptist studies program has announced a new website billed as the largest acculumulation of data about Baptist life ever assembled. ___ Correction: A Sept. 24 story on the contemporary Christian touring group Truth incorrectly stated that the musical "Good News" was written by Ralph Carmichael. It actually was written by Bob Oldenburg and published by Broadman Press in 1967 and was the first youth musical widely used in Baptist churches. Carmichael wrote "Tell It Like It Is" the next year.
