Dallas Press Club's Katie Awards honor Standard & Buckner writers ___DALLAS--Two editors of the Baptist Standard and two frequent contributors to the Standard were honored by the Press Club of Dallas at its Nov. 10 Katie Awards ceremony. ___The Katie Award is the most distinguished recognition of professional excellence in journalism given in North Texas. The competition is administered by a non-partisan organization supported by most major media and many corporate communications offices in the region. ___The competition is open to working journalists in Texas and the contiguous states, with divisions for newspapers, magazines, television, radio and corporate communications. ___Baptist Standard Editor Marv Knox won a Katie for his "Down Home" column, a weekly feature that highlights the lighter side of family life. His winning entry, titled "How Can Kids Attend School and Not Learn?" was the pick of the region for specialty columns in non-daily and special-interest newspapers. ___Managing Editor Mark Wingfield won a Katie for his series on cremation trends, titled "Ashes to Ashes." The set of stories explored changing Baptist attitudes toward cremation as an alternative to in-ground burial. The Katie recognized him for writing the region's best news series in a non-daily or special-interest newspaper. ___Scott Collins and Russ Dilday of Buckner Baptist Benevolences, both frequent contributors to the Standard, also won Katies for their work. ___The Buckner duo tied for presenting the region's best writing portfolio among public relations, corporate communications and employee communications professionals. This award was based on review of a sample of writing done over the previous year. ___Buckner also was a finalist this year in the category of annual report, recognizing work done by Collins and Buckner Art Director Alan Paul. Buckner was nominated alongside Dallas Area Rapid Transit and Children's Medical Center of Dallas. ___Other major recipients of Katie Awards in print categories this year included the Dallas Morning News, the Arlington Morning News, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, San Antonio Express-News, Corpus Christi Caller-Times and Texas Monthly.
