Around the state
___bluebull Geoff Bailey, a May 2001 graduate of Baylor University's Truett Seminary and a doctoral student in religion, was administered his military oath Oct. 26, as he was commissioned into the U.S. Army as a chaplain. Bailey was assigned to an Army Reserve battalion in Arkansas attached to one of its companies in Waco. After he completes his doctorate in religion at Baylor, he plans to pursue an active-duty chaplaincy.

___bluebull Dickson Rial, 50th in the ministry. A dinner program will be held in his honor Dec. 8 at 5 p.m. at the Hella Shriner Building in Garland. Tickets are $18, and by reservation only. During his ministry, he has served as pastor of Stadium Drive Church in Fort Worth, Orchard Hills Church in Garland, First Church in Ada, Okla., River Oaks Church in Houston, First Church in Benton, Ark., and Hillcrest Church in Dallas. He now is pastor at Orchard Hills for his second time. He was in full-time evangelism from 1991 to 2000. He also is the author of three books. ___bluebull Second Church in Odessa, 50th, Dec. 8-9. Saturday will begin a time of fellowship in the gymnasium at 6 p.m. At 7 p.m., the group will move to the worship center for a program of song and remembrances featuring former staff and youth who grew up in the church and are now serving elsewhere. A continental breakfast will begin at 9:15 a.m. Sunday. At 10 a.m., a move will be made to the courtyard for the dedication and unveiling of a historical marker. Charter member Sylvia Hinton will do the unveiling. After the ceremony, the morning worship service will feature former pastors Jim Hancock, Dave Adkins and Bruce Troy. Roy Edgemon, former pastor and missionary, will be the speaker for the missions banquet at 5 p.m. Cost for the banquet will be $5 for youth and adults, and $3 for children under 12, with a $20 family maximum. ___bluebull Ralph Caffey recently was honored by Grand Avenue Church in San Francisco, Calif., for his leadership as pastor there from 1956 to 1961. A building erected during his tenure was named in his honor. Caffey spent much of his ministry as a Texas pastor and resides in Big Spring.
___bluebull Col. Bud Day (retired) will be the guest speaker at Green Acres Church in Tyler for a special Veteran's Day service Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. Day is the most decorated living veteran and holds every significant combat award including the Medal of Honor, the Air Force Cross, the Distinguished Service Medal, the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with nine Oak Leaf Clusters. Veterans are invited to wear their uniforms. David Dykes is pastor.
___bluebull Castle Hills Church in Dallas will hold a Bible conference Dec. 9-12, with the theme of "Authentic Revival." Paige Patterson will speak on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Speakers for Monday-Wednesday at 7 p.m. are Bill Tolar, Jeff Bingham and Malcolm Ellis. Steve Skinner is pastor.

___bluebull J.B. Word as pastor of Travis Church in Corpus Christi, where he will continue to live.
___bluebull Nelson Ponthieux as pastor of Lakeside Church in New Braunfels. He will remain on staff as interim until a new pastor is called.
___bluebull Buckner Fanning as pastor of Trinity Church in San Antonio after 42 years. During that span, 19,886 joined the church, more than 6,000 were baptized. He also preached in more than 30 countries. He has served on the board of the Southern Baptist Convention Foreign Mission Board and as a trustee of Baylor University. He currently serves on the board of development for the Baptist Health System. Among his many recognitions are Churchman of the Year by the San Antonio Community of Churches, Distinguished Alumnus Award of Southwestern Seminary, and the George W. Truett Distinguished Church Service Award from Baylor University. He will continue to preach and speak in revival crusades, Bible conferences and church and civic events.
