CBF/World Vision begin Afghan relief ___ATLANTA--The Cooperative Baptist Fellowship has committed $100,000 in global missions funds to implement its partnership with World Vision for Afghan emergency response relief. ___CBF delivered its first installment of $30,000 to World Vision Nov. 28, with additional monies to follow in December and January. ___The organization of moderate Baptist churches is collaborating with World Vision, the largest Christian relief and development organization in the United States, to aid Afghan refugees as a harsh winter approaches. ___The $100,000 contribution will provide food supplies to acutely malnourished Afghans in areas of western Afghanistan that have been hardest hit by conflict and drought. ___World Vision recently sent its first relief worker into Afghanistan, a major breakthrough in a planned campaign to help many of the 2.5 million internally displaced people. ___"The immediate priority is obviously to deliver food and save lives, but we also want to develop quality in-depth programs that will put the Afghan population on a path to full recovery," said Robyn Kennedy, Pakistan program manager. "I think that will be our larger challenge over the long run--the effort to restore people's health and well-being after they have had to endure so much suffering and loss." ___The delivery of relief aid remains a major challenge due to high insecurity on roads across Afghanistan's eastern border from Pakistan and throughout the country itself. ___Volunteer opportunities are limited due to the difficulty of travel within Afghanistan. However, current needs exist for logistics coordinators, finance managers and nurse/nutritionists to implement a supplementary feeding program in northwest Afghanistan. Placement of these volunteers is anticipated by the end of January 2002. ___These highly qualified and skilled volunteers are needed for at least three-month commitments. Volunteer forms are available by calling (877) 856-9288.
