___bluebull Prayer partners sought. An International Mission Board missionary couple is seeking Texas Baptists to join with them in praying for an end to the persecution of Christians in North Africa and the Middle East. "Many who have converted to Christianity are being persecuted by governments, family systems and Islamic leaders fearful of losing their people," the couple explained. They urge Texas Baptists to pray for those who persecute Christians. For more information, write to Prayer Coordinator, P.O. Box 214, Redhill, Surrey, RH1 1FP, UK, or send e-mail to edandellen2000@yahoo.com.
___bluebull Merritt urges prayer for Muslims. The president of the Southern Baptist Convention is calling on church members to fast and pray for the conversion of Muslims on the last day of Islam's holy month, Ramadan. James Merritt, pastor of First Baptist Church in Snellville, Ga., issued a statement Nov. 26 asking Southern Baptists to fast on Dec. 16 and pray that "God will miraculously and supernaturally reveal himself through Jesus Christ to Muslims."
___bluebull Southwestern inaugurates Roberts Chair. The Thad Roberts chair of church music ministry was inaugurated at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary Nov. 14. President Ken Hemphill installed David Music in the chair. The endowed faculty chair is named in memory of the longtime music minister at South Main Baptist Church in Houston who died in 1987. The chair was endowed by David and Charis Smith, members of the Houston church's choir.
___bluebull Bellevue pays off relocation debt. Members of Bellevue Baptist Church near Memphis, Tenn., gave nearly $1.5 million in a single Sunday to retire the debt incurred by the congregation's move to a new location 14 years ago. The Nov. 18 offering leaves the church where Adrian Rogers is pastor virtually debt-free. As part of the 1987 relocation, the church also paid for $30 million of construction with cash.
___bluebull ABC names new leaders. A New Jersey church administrator has been tapped as the new general secretary of the American Baptist Churches USA, promising to help create a "color-affirming community where we can celebrate the kaleidoscope of God's creation and relish the rich hues of humanity." Roy Medley was confirmed as the denomination's top executive Nov. 16 by the church's General Board. Medley currently serves as executive minister for New Jersey and will begin his four-year term Jan. 14, 2002.
