First Baptist Church of Duncanville, First Baptist Church of Carrollton and dean of DBU's College of Christian Faith. He played an integral role in establishing DBU in its current location in 1965, when the school moved from Decatur.
___ Church offers turkey take-out. For the second year in a row, volunteers at Calvary Baptist Church of Sulphur Springs spent Thanksgiving preparing, serving and delivering traditional turkey dinners with all the fixings to area residents who otherwise would have gone without. The congregation, which averages about 80 in weekly Bible study attendance, served 42 people at the church and delivered 20 meals to homebound and needy individuals.
___ Governor may rally for prayer. Gov. Rick Perry has been invited back to the East Texas town of Palestine to speak at a "Restore Prayer in School" rally. The governor drew attention and some criticism for joining in a prayer during a student assembly at a Palestine middle school in October. The Dec. 17 rally is to be held at Southside Baptist Church, according to the Associated Press.
___ Texas abortion case heard. The Texas Supreme Court heard arguments Nov. 28 in a case testing the state's refusal to fund abortions for poor women with serious medical conditions. Opponents of the state's practice contend it is discriminatory against women, because any procedure deemed medically necessary by doctors for men is covered by state aid. The state counters that the policy is discriminatory against abortion, not women. A ruling is not expected until sometime next year.
___ Mercer and Curry at Baylor. Baylor University's Ferrell Center will be the site of a communitywide celebration service at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, for Baylor graduates Dayna Curry and Heather Mercer. The women were two of eight foreign aid workers in Afghanistan imprisoned by the Taliban for more than three months until their dramatic rescue Nov. 14. The service, coordinated through Waco's Antioch Community Church, is free and open to the public.
