Bruce McIver, pastor emeritus of Wilshire Church, dead at age 76
___Bruce McIver, pastor emeritus of Wilshire Baptist Church in Dallas, died Dec. 22 of congestive heart failure at age 76.
___Before his death, he completed the manuscript for his fourth book, which chronicles the youth revival movement of the 1940s and '50s in which he played a pivotal role. Starting at Baylor University in 1945, the youth revival movement led thousands of young adults to profess

faith in Jesus Christ and thousands more to enter Christian ministry as a vocation. That book, "Riding the Wind of God," is to be published by Smyth & Helwys Publishers this spring.
___McIver served as pastor at Wilshire for 30 years of the congregation's 50-year history, from 1958 to 1988.
___He served as a trustee of Baylor University and the Children's Medical Foundation of Texas, as well as the Annuity Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, where he was chairman. He served as first vice president of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, chairman of the BGCT Executive Board and chairman of the BGCT's Christian Life Commission.
___Baylor University honored McIver with both the doctor of laws degree and the George W. Truett Distinguished Service Award. He received the Elder Statesman Award from the BGCT and the Distinguished Alumni Award from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He and his wife, Lawanna, together received the Norvell Slater Lifetime Achievement Award from the Dallas chapter of the Religious Communicators Council.
___McIver was a graduate of Mars Hill College, Baylor University and Southwestern Seminary.
___After graduation from seminary, he became director of the Baptist Student Union and a Bible instructor at Southwest Texas State College in San Marcos. He later held a similar position at Texas Tech University in Lubbock and then was named associate director of Baptist Student Union work statewide for Texas Baptists.
___He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Lawanna; daughters, Kathie (Kate) McIver of Greensboro, N.C. and Shannon Allen of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and Renie McCarthy of Avondale, Pa.; five grandchildren; and a sister, Ella Payne.
___ David Grogan, instructor of music at East Texas Baptist University, recently received second place honors at the National Association of Teachers of Singing regional "Singer of the Year" competition held at Baylor University.

___ Len Sehested, 84, Dec. 12 in Fort Worth. A native of Scotland and later a resident of Australia, she was active with international students at her home, church, community and abroad. She had a ministry to youth, college students and senior adults. She also facilitated marriage enrichment, personal growth and grief seminars nationwide. Sehested worked for the Christian Life Commission of the Baptist General Convention of Texas and was a Staley lecturer to many colleges. She was a longtime member of University Church in Fort Worth. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman, in 1978. She is survived by her brother, Bill Bailie; sisters, Robina Drakeford, Eve Lumb and May Piggott; and grandchildren.
___ Mary Lovvorn, 72, Dec. 14 in Dallas. She was devoted to First Church in Dallas and the education of ministers. She had established scholarships at Baylor University, Dallas Theological Seminary, Southwestern Seminary and Criswell College. She had been active in her church's youth ministry for 50 years. She was an adviser to the Baylor University Women's Council, a distinguished life member of the President's Club and a secretary to the advisory board of Southwestern Seminary. In addition, she was on the advisory board of KCBI radio, a founding board member of Marketplace Ministries, which provides chaplains for businesses, and a former member of the board of trustees of Howard Payne University. She had received many honors for her support of young ministers, including the Woman of Distinction from Baylor University and the B.H. Carroll Founder's Award from Southwestern Seminary. She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin, in 1982. She is survived by her son, Mark; daughters, Janet Lovvorn, Linda Dallas and Laurie Sedwick; sister, Gloria Yates; and 13 grandchildren.
___ Kenneth Tierce, 68, Dec. 18 in Abilene, following a car/motorcycle accident. Tierce was serving as interim pastor of Calvary Church in Abilene at the time of his death. Tierce was a pastor of churches in Texas and California from 1960 to 1982. He had run a family business from 1983 until 2000. He was preceded in death by his sister, Marthalyn Webb. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joyce; sons, Randy and Mark; daughter, Rhonda Collins; brothers, Richard and Tom; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
