way. What the convention needs now is financial help in equipping the center. Duncan McIntosh, director of church health/education for the convention, estimates that $66,000 worth of equipment, such as computers and desks, will be needed. The focus of the center will be leadership training for urban ministry, and he is hoping Baptists from as far away as Texas will utilize it. The John Leland Center for Theological Studies, based in Falls Church, Va., also is expected to use the facility for classes.
___bluebull Point the way for tourists. Tourism is big in the nation's capital; therefore, ministry to tourists is big as well. The District of Columbia Baptist Convention needs more volunteers to help in reaching out to the city's visitors, said Gloria Grogan, director of Baptist Women/special ministries. ___bluebull Put a byte into faith. The Johenning Baptist Center can use all kinds of help, said director Wes Garrett. But the center especially needs volunteers to teach computer skills to neighborhood residents. The center serves families in an economically depressed area. Texas Baptist individuals and groups also could help by tutoring children, leading Backyard Bible Clubs and Vacation Bible Schools. Garrett is open to other suggestions, as well. "Tell us what your group is used to doing," and Garrett will see if he can use that service, he said. Church groups also could provide school supplies, lunch bags and toothbrushes for children.
___bluebull Raise the roof. Eglise Baptiste du Calvaire has plans for this summer--plans to begin construction on its new building. And the members need help. The Haitian congregation has grown to more than 450 people in worship attendance, said Pastor Jean St-Ulme. The church has committed itself to reaching 45,000 Haitians living in the Washington area. "The building will be an asset" in keeping that commitment, St-Ulme said.
