Souper Bowl aids hunger relief
___COLUMBIA, S.C.--Before heading home from church to eat at a Super Bowl party, Baptists nationwide are being encouraged to take part in the Souper Bowl first.
___A national movement called the Souper Bowl of Caring encourages churches to take a special collection for world hunger at the conclusion of morning worship Jan. 28.
___The idea is simple. Youth are stationed at each sanctuary exit with big soup bowls. Each parishioner is asked to place one dollar in the pot as they exit. The proceeds are then donated to a hunger ministry of the church's choice.
___That could be the Texas Baptist Hunger Offering, the Southern Baptist hunger offering, a local food bank or soup kitchen.
___The only thing Souper Bowl organizers ask in return is a report of how much is collected so they can tally a national total. Totals may be reported by calling (800) 358-7687 or online at www.souperbowl.org.
___Last year, more than 11,000 churches nationwide participated in the Souper Bowl. Nearly 60 of those were Texas Baptist churches.
___"The Souper Bowl of caring offers people in churches across the country a simple but significant way to join together in caring and unity," said Souper Bowl founder Brad Smith. "We believe this idea is a gift from God, and we encourage people ... to join the team on Jan. 28."
