Powell named dean of Baylor's Truett Seminary

___WACO--Baylor University President Robert Sloan has named Paul Powell dean of Truett Theological Seminary.
___The appointment was made one month after the top candidate produced by a university search committee declined to accept the post.
___Powell, 67, is a veteran Texas Baptist pastor who retired in 1998 as president of the Southern Baptist Convention's Annuity Board. He subsequently has been president of the Robert Rogers Foundation in Tyler.

___DALLAS--The Baptist General Convention of Texas has elevated prayer and spiritual development within its new staff structure by creating a separate prayer office and naming Ted Elmore to lead it. The office of prayer and spiritual development will be part of the new church missions and evangelism section.

SBC agency defunded by BGCT campaigns for Ashcroft's approval
___WASHINGTON--For the first time, a Southern Baptist Convention agency has endorsed a particular candidate for political appointment.
___The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, an SBC agency recently defunded by the Baptist General Convention of Texas because of its perceived partisanship, endorsed John Ashcroft's nomination as United States attorney general.
___"On behalf of the vast majority of over 16 million Southern Baptists nationwide, I urge you to support the confirmation of Sen. John Ashcroft," ERLC President Richard Land told senators in a letter publicized through Baptist Press.
