Volunteers teachers sought for China ___DALLAS--Volunteers are needed to teach English in China this summer, according to Lorene Salyer, China coordinator for the Mission Service Corps office of the Baptist General Convention of Texas. ___About 30-40 Texas Baptists each year teach English as a Second Language courses in China, she said. The BGCT works with three sending agencies--The Edge Institute, the Southern Baptist International Mission Board and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. ___Each program is similar, with volunteers teaching three or four hours each morning and being involved in some afternoon activities, Salyer said. ___"It's a lot of work. It's a lot of fun," said Salyer, who has volunteered five times herself. "It's very interesting. It's life-changing." ___Government rules prevent volunteers from being outwardly evangelistic, but they can provide a "lifestyle" witness and answer students' questions. ___Volunteers must have a bachelor's degree and have some experience in teaching, either in schools or in church programs, Salyer said. ___The Edge Institute is sending an ESL group to Sichuan University in Chengdu, China, June 30-Aug. 5. Cost is estimated at $2,000. ___The IMB group will serve in "selected locations" in China. The entire trip, including orientation and debriefing in Hong Kong, will be July 4-Aug. 4. Cost is $2,500. ___The CBF is sending two groups. The first is for college students and is a "cultural exchange," Salyer said. Cost is $2,200, and the dates are June 19-July 8. The second is a standard ESL project, July 5-Aug. 6, and cost is $2,200 if paid by April 10 or $2,400 afterward. ___For more information, call Salyer at (214) 828-5295 or send e-mail to salyer@bgct.org. Her mail address is Baptist General Convention of Texas, 333 N. Washington, Dallas 75246-1798.
