___ Luther Dillard, Dec. 31, as pastor of County Line Church in Rogers. He was in the ministry for 54 years, serving as pastor of churches in Granger, Somerville, Lufkin, Tomball, Beaumont, Temple and Rogers. He is available for supply or other ministry opportunities.

SAN JACINTO BAPTIST ASSOCIATION broke ground Dec. 10 for a mission center. Plans include administrative offices, media and resource library and space for training and fellowships. The building is scheduled to be completed mid-year 2001. Participating in the ceremony were Stan Jordan, association moderator and pastor of Bayshore Church in La Porte; Bill Ingram, building committee chairperson and minister of music/administration at First Church in Baytown; and Lee Walker, director of missions.

has served the association for more than seven years and has been in the ministry for 47 years. He and his wife, Mary Lou, will reside in Amarillo and will be available for ministry. A reception will be held in their honor Feb. 11 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Baptist Student Ministries building in Beeville.
___Deaths
___ James Lunsford, 90, Dec. 17. Lunsford was an emeritus International Mission Board missionary to Brazil. He and his wife, Jewel, were appointed as missionaries in 1940. Lunsford was a professor and director at a Baptist college and secretary-treasurer of the state Baptist convention while they served in Brazil. In Brasilia, he did field evangelistic work, served as pastor of the Baptist church in Nucleo Bandeirante and was director of the stewardship department of his state's Baptist board. The Lunsfords retired in 1976. Prior to his missionary appointment, he was pastor of several Texas churches, including First Church in O'Donnell and Elmwood Church in Abilene. He is survived by his wife; sons, James and Eddie; daughters, Jane Tidwell and Maura Sanders; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
___ Berl Cavin, 77, Dec. 27 in Abilene. Cavin spent 50 years in the ministry, including serving as pastor of Admiral Church in Callahan County, Vera Church in Seymour, Second Church in Dublin, Manchaca Church in Manchaca, Capitol Heights Church in Austin and Wylie Church in Abilene. He also spent 27 years in Dallas, where he was pastor of Town East Church for eight years and served for 19 years as director of the missions division of Dallas Baptist Association. After retiring there in 1989, he became pastor of New Hope Church in Big Sandy. He retired from there in 1999 and returned to Abilene, where he was a member of First Church. He is survived by his wife, Agnes; son, Bob Cavin; daughter, Debbie Coltman; brother, Alton Cavin; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
___ Lawrence Clayton, 62, Dec. 31 in Abilene. Clayton was dean of the college of liberal arts at Hardin-Simmons University. During his 33-year tenure at Hardin-Simmons, he had served as dean, head of the English department and English professor. Clayton was a former president of the West Texas Historical Association, the Southwest Popular Culture Association and the Western Literature Association. He was a founding board member of the Western Heritage Classic in Abilene and a member of First Church in Throckmorton. A well-known author about topics concerning cowboys and the West, Clayton received numerous accolades. He recently was honored by the announcement that the Dodge Jones Foundation had endowed the Clayton Roundtable Room, which will be the signature feature in the Elwin Skiles Social Sciences Building soon to be built on the Hardin-Simmons campus. He is survived by his wife, Sonja; daughters, DeLys Mitchell and Lea Clayton; and two grandchildren.
