___ King to occupy new chair. A $1 million chair of conducting will be inaugurated in formal ceremonies at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary Feb. 15. Joseph King, professor of conducting and chair of the conducting department at Southwestern, will be named the first occupant of the Robert Burton Chair of Conducting.
___ Teachers sought in Honduras. Academia Los Pinares, located in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, is accepting applications for teaching and administrative positions for the 2001-2002 school year. This is an accredited, English immersion school with a 30-year history. Employees receive a small stipend in addition to housing, insurance and annual travel from Miami, Houston or New Orleans. ___ Mattox gets community award. Beaumont pastor Frederick Mattox received the Community Champion Award recently from the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse. Mattox, pastor of Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church, started a "Recovering Christian Addicts Ministry" and implemented several programs to provide for the physical and spiritual needs of children in his neighborhood.
___ Musical nominated for Dove. "Experiencing God ... The Musical," published by Genevox Music, an imprint of LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention, has been nominated for a Dove Award. The musical is among five in the "musical of the year" category, with the winner to be announced April 26. Written by Claire Cloninger and Gary Rhodes, the 70-minute work features original songs, along with some classic hymns, praise choruses and contemporary Christian songs.
___ Southern fills deanships. Southern Baptist Theological Seminary has filled two vacant deanships, elevating Thomas Bolton to dean of the school of church music and worship and Brad Waggoner to dean of the school of Christian education and leadership. Bolton had been serving as acting dean and will continue to serve as a professor of church music. Waggoner will continue to serve as associate professor of Christian education and leadership.
___ Florida ups gifts to SBC. Florida Baptists will send an additional $1.6 million to the Southern Baptist Convention in Cooperative Program receipts this year, announced John Sullivan, executive director-treasurer of the Florida Baptist Convention. "At a time when other state conventions are cutting their support, we are sending $1.5 million in additional money to the SBC." The funds come partially from the Florida convention's budget surplus of $2.6 million last year and partially from anticipated increases in Cooperative Program giving this year.
