FAMILY MATTERS:
Plan to worship during your vacation

___My wife and I are planning a vacation. We used to search out a local church and attend on Sunday mornings during our vacations. However, we have noticed that no one on vacation ever visits our church. Is this an out-of-date custom?

Attending worship services on the Lord's Day is never out-of-date. Many of my fondest memories are of the wonderful churches my family visited when we were on vacation throughout the United States.
___Not knowing where you plan to vacation, it is difficult to know whether any churches would be near your vacation site. This might be something you could research before starting off. If you have access to a computer, check the Internet for churches just as you would search for local tourist attractions.
___Sometimes potential visitors are hesitant because they are unsure of such things as the appropriate dress, time of worship services, handicap accessibility and many other such matters. A quick call to the church once you arrive at your destination could answer these questions.
___Also, many hotels and RV camps have lists of local churches. Area phone directories and local Chambers of Commerce will have church listings. If you are using a travel agent, ask that they provide information about churches along with the other information they will be giving you.
___You might check with the desk clerk, or even with local residents at area restaurants, to find out about services. Particularly in smaller towns, the people living there are very familiar with the churches.
___Sometimes, though, there is no church available for you to attend. Plan to include devotion and Bible reading during the time you would normally devote to church. Some vacation destinations offer a splendid view of God's creation and provide a magnificent backdrop for your worship.
___You also mention that no one on vacation ever attends your church. If you are in a popular tourist destination, you might think about whether your church is inviting to visitors. Even though these individuals may not be prospects to join, they would appreciate a welcoming place to praise the Lord.
___Planning to include worship in your vacation should be as significant as finding out about the local tourist attractions. Our Lord does not take a vacation from us. We should not take a vacation from him.
