River Ministry training events offered
___HARLINGEN--Baptist churches along the Rio Grande are in need of evangelistic, construction and medical/dental help from Texas Baptists, said Loren Fast. A series of training events have been scheduled to help groups plan and prepare for such mission trips to the border area.
___Fast, associate director of the Rio Grande River Ministry of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, said generally there is a need for leadership training. Baptists along the river are not just wanting people to "come down there and do it for them," he said. They're wanting to learn how to lead programs themselves.
___Texas Baptists who are "looking for opportunities to do mission work along the border but don't know where to start or how to find a project" are encouraged to attend one of three basic orientation and training retreats, Fast said. They will be held Feb. 24 in Tyler, March 3 in Georgetown and March 10 in Big Spring. Cost is $10.
___As for churches that already have made plans for a mission trip this year, five "on-site retreats" are planned. They will be Feb. 9-10 in Laredo, Feb. 16-17 in Eagle Pass and Mission, Feb. 24-25 in Kingsville and March 30-31 in El Paso. The cost varies from $10 to $20.
___"The border associations require groups to make an on-site visit before doing their project," Fast said. The on-site trips allow mission project leaders to actually visit the places where they will be serving in order to help them better prepare.
___All the training events are for "key leaders" of mission projects, Fast said.
