___SAN ANTONIO--While much of the world watched the Super Bowl on television, about 2,000 Hispanic Texans gathered to hear the gospel preached in Spanish on Sunday night, Jan. 28. Forty made decisions to follow Christ.
___Luis Palau, a worldwide evangelist from Argentina, preached a one-night evangelistic crusade at First Baptist Church of San Antonio on the night before the Baptist General Convention of Texas Evangelism Conference. Full Story

Bush's faith-based funding proposals draw mixed reviews, face challenge
___WASHINGTON (RNS)--Making good on a campaign promise to increase the role of faith-based institutions in public policy, President George W. Bush laid the groundwork Jan. 29 to allow religious organizations to receive government money in exchange for fighting poverty, addiction, homelessness and a range of social ills.
___After a White House meeting with nearly three dozen religious leaders, Bush announced his new White House Office for Faith-based and Community Initiatives, a clearinghouse of sorts for programs that promote faith as a means to deliver social services. Full Story
O'Hair may be dead, but will the phony FCC petition live on?

___AUSTIN--Authorities are almost certain they have found the dismembered remains of atheist leader Madalyn Murray O'Hair and two relatives missing since September 1995.
___The discovery could be the final chapter in a bizarre life that was the focus of international media attention since 1960, when O'Hair sued the Baltimore school district to stop school-sponsored prayer and Bible readings in public schools.

David Garland named associate academic dean at Truett Seminary
___WACO--David Garland has been named associate dean for academic affairs at Baylor University's Truett Theological Seminary. Garland joined Truett's faculty in 1997 as professor of Christian Scriptures. He came to Baylor after 21 years at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., where he was professor of New Testament and chair of the biblical division.
