___Texas Baptist volunteers have completed their involvement in immediate disaster relief following an earthquake that hit El Salvador, and they are moving into at least six months of recovery and rebuilding.
___Texas Baptist Men transferred the operation of two emergency field kitchens to local Christians last weekend. One kitchen operated in the Santa Tecla area, serving people housed in a tent city at a soccer field. The other was set up in a remote mountainous location.
___The Texas volunteers had served up to 10,000 meals a day to El Salvadorans who were displaced by an earthquake that killed more than 700 people and damaged 190,000 homes.
___Spanish-speaking volunteers shared the gospel with people in the serving lines during meals each day. In less than two weeks, more than 300 people made professions of faith in Jesus Christ as a direct result of the emergency food service ministry.
___The week of Feb. 11-17, a team directed by Bryan Finley of Kerrville will work in the Santiago de Maria area, helping local people clear debris and prepare for rebuilding.
___Over the next six to eight months, Texas Baptists will be part of a multi-state rebuilding program coordinated by the Southern Baptist Convention International Mission Board.
___Volunteer teams will fulfill one-week assignments, typically from Sunday to Saturday. Cost is $750 per volunteer. The IMB will provide all equipment.
___Volunteers wishing to participate in the rebuilding project should contact Texas Baptist Men at (214) 828-5356. Anyone wishing to contribute to the ongoing disaster response may send designated checks, made payable to "Baptist Executive Board," to the Treasurer's Office, 333 N. Washington, Dallas 75246-1798.
