___ Profs get overseas funding. Trustees of the Southern Baptist International Mission Board have allocated $500,000 for the Seminary Professors Abroad program, to expand the use of professors serving overseas terms of four weeks to four months. This is in addition to existing funding for seminary professors to participate in short-term missions assignments. Trustees want the professors to bring the missions message back to their campuses.
___ Mohler: Truth vs. liberty. The conflict among Southern Baptists in the last two decades can be distilled into ideals represented by two opposing sides, according to Al Mohler, president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. During a recent conference on Baptist identity, Mohler identified himself and other conservatives as the "truth party" and those on the other side as the "liberty party." Conservatives have been concerned with preserving accurate biblical truth at all costs, while moderates have been concerned with preserving personal autonomy at all costs, he said.
___ Vietnam is focus of prayer. Southern Baptist missions leaders are asking Christians worldwide to join in an International Day of Prayer for Vietnam May 6. Of the 54 people groups that comprise Vietnam's 78 million people, one group--the Kinh--has more than 23 million people who do not know Jesus. The International Day of Prayer for Vietnam was planned last October during a meeting of Great Commission Christians who minister in the country. The representatives decided to designate the first Sunday in May each year to prayer for Vietnam, beginning with 2001. The date coincides with the anniversary of the fall of Saigon.
