___ Viertel receives HSU award. Weldon Viertel is the first recipient of the Jesse Fletcher Award for distinguished service in missions at Hardin-Simmons University. Viertel served 36 years as a foreign missionary, including 11 years in the Caribbean, seven years at the Baptist Spanish Publishing House in El Paso, eight years in the Philippines and three years in the Middle East and North Africa.
___ Stanlake dean of graduate studies. Gary Stanlake has been named new dean of graduate studies at Hardin-Simmons University. He succeeds Dan McAlexander, who moved to Belmont University.
___ Ethnic youth night planned. Hispanic Baptist Theological School will sponsor Super Summer Bash 2001, an event for South Texas ethnic youth, June 1 at 7 p.m. The event will include music provided by local bands, snacks, information about attending college, door-prize drawings, fun and fellowship for youth ages 13-18. The purpose, according to President Albert Reyes, "is to provide a safe place and Christian environment for South Texas youth to have fun and expose them to opportunities to attend a Texas Baptist institution of higher learning." ___ Nominations sought. July 31 is the deadline for submitting nominations for the 2001 Texas Baptist Missions Foundation mission service awards. The Pioneer Award for service in missions, the Innovator Award for creativity in missions and the Adventurer Award for leadership in missions will be presented at the annual session of the Baptist General Convention of Texas. ___ Truett graduates Texans. Six Texans were among the spring graduates of Baylor University's Truett Theological Seminary. They are Matthew Dee Baker, Kerrville; Tiffani Renee Cox Harris, Dallas; Ann Elizabeth Livingston, Dallas; Karen Ann Pennings, Richardson; Camron Paul Scott, San Angelo; and Nikki Robin Simpson, Waco.
___ UMHB taps Shipp. Ben Shipp has been named assistant vice president and
___director of athletics at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. He has been director of the athletic department since 1996.
___ UMHB gets $150,000. The Grogan Lord Foundation has given a $50,000 grant for the Ida Myrtle Roberts Manning Tomorrow's Leaders Scholarship and $100,000 for the Parker Academic Center at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
___ Howard Payne honors Garcia, Harris. During commencement ceremonies May 12, Howard Payne University awarded honorary doctorates to Jimmy Garcia, ethnic missions coordinator for the Baptist General Convention of Texas, and James Harris, longtime educator in the Lubbock Independent School District. The school graduated 249 students from its baccalaureate programs.
___ Correction: An article in the May 7 Standard wrongly identified Jewell Davis as a member of Southcrest Baptist Church in Lubbock. He actually is a member of First Baptist Church in Lubbock.
