Around the state
___bluebull Wayland Baptist University recently honored several faculty and staff members. Carroll Melnyk, associate professor of education, received the University Service Award. Claude Lusk, assistant professor of business, earned the Community Service Award. Jim Todd, chairman of the School of Education, received the Contribution to Profession Award. Perry Collins, assistant professor of psychology, earned the Scholarship Award. Philip Almes, professor of mathematics, was honored as the university's nominee for the national Minnie Stevens Piper award, which recognizes professors for their contributions to the profession of education. Staff members receiving awards were Connie Peralez, Donna Wiley, Vernon Norris and Julie Bowen.

Pastor Charles Davenport of First Church in Tulia was named Crossings Pastor of the Year 2000 by the Crossing Book Club, a division of Doubleday. Davenport was nominated by Librarian Betty Ellerd, pictured with him.
___Retiring
___bluebull David Hale, May 31, as pastor of Northside Church in Corsicana for 30 years and 40 years in the ministry.
___bluebull Watson Moore, May 31, as controller of Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene. Moore has served as controller since November 1987 and is a former member of the school's board of development. He also has administered the school's Six White Horses program. He is a deacon at First Church in Sweetwater.
___bluebull Sonny Steed, May 31, as minister of education and administration at First Church in Pasadena, where he has served for five years. During his 48-year ministry, he has served churches in Texas and Louisiana.

___Anniversaries
___bluebull Steve Vernon, 10th, as pastor of First Church in Levelland and 25th in the ministry May 20.
___bluebull First Church in Hawkins, 90th, June 10. Lunch will follow the morning service. Gary O'Day is pastor.

___bluebull Highland Church in Lubbock, 50th, June 23-24. A women's brunch will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, and a celebration banquet will be held at 7 p.m. that evening at the McInturff Conference Center of the University Medical Center. Everyone planning to attend is asked to make banquet reservations and schedule a time for a family portrait by calling (806) 795-6453.

___Deaths
___bluebull Leon Williams, 73, May 7 in Tyler. Williams was pastor of churches in Neches, Wortham, Jacksonville, Ponta, Trinidad and Shreveport, La. He had been living in Grand Saline since retirement five years ago. He was a member of First Church in Mineola. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Kirk Moore. He is survived by his wife, Pat; son Mike; daughters, Karla Pruitt and Linda Moore; brothers, Harlin, Johnnie and A.D.; sisters, Wilma Newton, Ola Joyce King and Minnie Newton; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
___bluebull Tid McAden, 82, May 21 in Dallas. McAden was a retired associate dean for students at Hardin-Simmons University. She retired in 1984 and received the John Keeter Alumni Service Award the same year. She was named woman of the year by REATA, the campus news magazine, in 1983. She also was a 13-year member of the Abilene board of education. Her grandfather, Jefferson Davis Sandefer, was HSU president from 1909 until 1940--the longest tenure in the school's history. While a resident of Abilene, she was a member of First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claud. She is survived by her daughters, Lyn Roberts, Ann Elizabeth Lawson and Nancy Wallace, and her brother, Sonny Compere Jr.

___bluebull Clearfork Church in Hawley has been established with Larry Tarver as pastor.
___bluebull Elliott Church in Hearne will hold a homecoming to celebrate 112 years of ministry June 10. Worship, testimonies and acknowledgements of the church's importance to the community will be heard. A noon meal and afternoon of music also are planned. Dale Wells is interim pastor.
