Texas missions facts
___ About one of every five missionaries serving with the SBC International Mission Board calls Texas home. That's 934 missionaries out of 4,923.
___ Texas Baptists support 15 formal international partnerships through the IMB.
___ On any week in the summer, Texas Baptist volunteers are working alongside IMB missionaries in more than 20 countries.
___ About 5 percent of BGCT-affiliated churches partner with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship in missions with gifts directed through the BGCT.
___ In 1999, Texas Baptist churches sent $26.8 million to the IMB through the BGCT. This includes $13 million in undesignated Cooperative Program funding and $13.8 million in Lottie Moon offerings. That represents about 14 percent of the $188 million given to the IMB nationally that year.
___ While the total number of missionaries counted by the IMB has increased in the last decade, the number of career missionaries has decreased, from 3,365 in 1990 to 3,323 in 1999.
___ In 1999, Texas Baptist churches sent $11.8 million to the North American Mission Board through the BGCT. This includes $5.9 million in undesignated Cooperative Program funding and $5.9 million in Annie Armstrong offerings. These Texas funds accounted for about 14 percent of NAMB's gifts.
___ For the current year, missions projects in Texas jointly funded by the BGCT and NAMB total $2.83 million, with NAMB providing $1.28 million and the BGCT providing $1.55 million.
___ Of 5,081 missionaries reported to be under NAMB's appointment, only about 40 are fully funded by NAMB. The majority are volunteers or are jointly funded by state Baptist conventions.
___ Mission Service Corps volunteers from Texas account for 47 percent of the Mission Service Corps workforce nationwide.
___ Texas is home to 388 NAMB-endorsed chaplains and pastoral counselors.
