___ Included among the International Mission Board emeritus missionaries recently recognized were a number of Texans. Johnny and Barbara Burnett retired Oct. 1, 2000, after 34 years serving in Brazil and Tanzania. His pre-missionary experience included being minister of education and music at First Church in Dimmitt. He also served churches in Floydada, Amarillo and Plainview, as well as Oklahoma and Kansas. He considers Terrell his hometown. Mildred Douglas retired in January after 29 years of service. She and her husband, Ray, worked in the Dominican Republic until his death in 1980. She transferred to El Paso Baptist Publications the next year. Orman and Elizabeth Gwynn will retire in March 2002. They were appointed to Brazil in 1964. Since 1997, they have been working in the Caribbean Basin. He considers Robstown his hometown and she Corpus Christi. Charles and Rebecca Middleton retired in February from Southern Africa. She is from Houston. Elbert and Jo Clary Smithen will retire in July after 23 years of service in Peru. He is a former Texas pastor.
___ The Baptist Student Union at the United States Air Force Academy would like to contact men and women reporting to the school June 27 and 28. For cadets arriving June 27, the BSU will meet them at the airport, provide free lodging, meals, transportation and take them to the academy at the appointed time the next day. ___Deaths
___ Claude Tipps, 82, May 29 in Dallas. Tipps was a pastor for 54 years in Texas, including 16 years at Southside Church in Irving. He retired in 1998 and was a member of Hampton Road Church in DeSoto. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; son, Doug Tipps; daughters, Gaynell Seale and Claudia Mize; sister, LaNelle Claunch; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
___ Johnny Joiner, 74, May 9. Joiner was pastor of Hall Church in Jefferson. He previously was pastor of Fairview Church in Marshall and two Louisiana churches. He was preceded in death by two wives, Earline and Marion. He is survived by his wife, Jean; daughter, Jonaline Thatcher; sons, John and Kevin; and several grandchildren.
___Retiring
___ Francis Wilson, June 30, as business administrator of the Baptist Convention of New Mexico. Prior to moving to New Mexico where he was a pastor for many years, he also was pastor of a Georgia church. Texas churches he served include Trinity Church in Henderson, First Church in Troup, First Church in Monahans and Trinity Church in Lubbock. He also served two terms on the Executive Board of the Baptist General Convention of Texas.
