___ LifeWay to publish Oliver North. Former U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Col. Oliver North, who figured prominently in the Iran-Contra controversy during the Reagan presidency, has signed with Broadman & Holman, a division of LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention, to write a series of novels. North will write action thrillers drawing on his life as a Marine, a covert operative, a family man, a born-again Christian and a media personality.
___ SBC reports increase in direct gifts. The number of Texas Baptist churches sending Cooperative Program gifts directly to the Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee is growing, according to SBC officials. David Hankins, vice president for Cooperative Program services at the Executive Committee, said Texas churches sent $372,288 in direct Cooperative Program gifts in May.
___ Stagg dies. Frank Stagg, one of Southern Baptists' foremost Bible teachers, died June 2 at his home in Louisville, Ky., after an illness. He was 89. Stagg taught 14 years at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville before retiring in 1978. Earlier, he taught 19 years at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and was pastor of several churches in Louisiana.
___ Heritage Society to examine decade of CBF. The William H. Whitsitt Baptist Heritage Society will look at 10 years of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship at the society's upcoming annual meeting. "A Decade of Destiny: Ten Years of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship" will be the theme for the Whitsitt Society's meeting beginning at 1 p.m. June 28 at the World Congress Center in Atlanta. Mercer University professor Walter Shurden will deliver a keynote lecture with responses by sociologist Nancy Ammerman, Virginia editor Michael Clingenpeel and Texas Baptist leader Charles Wade.
___ Baptist woman named Air Force chief of chaplains. For the first time, the U.S. Air Force has named a woman chief of chaplain service. Maj. Gen. Lorraine Potter, an American Baptist, replaced Maj. Gen. William Dendinger. Potter is the first woman chief of chaplains in any branch of the U.S. military services. In her post, she directs and trains more than 2,350 active duty, guard and reserve chaplains and support personnel in the chaplain service.
___ Southeastern graduates five Texans. Five Texas students received degrees May 26 from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C. David Lindgens of Leander and James Thompson of Hilton both received the bachelor of arts in biblical arts degree. Miles Mullin of McAllen and Steven Slauson of Killeen both received the master of divinity. Joe Stepp of Perryton received the master of divinity in Christian education.
___ Baylor hosts youth event. Baylor University will offer a youth missions project and evangelistic rally in Waco June 19-21. The event, called Reach Waco, is expected to attract about 1,000 teenagers for a prayerwalk, missions projects and worship rallies led by evangelist Voddie Baucham.
