___ Steen recruits for UMHB. The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor has named Robbin Steen director of admissions and recruiting. The native of Edna received the bachelor of science degree in psychology from UMHB in 1996 and the master of arts in business administration in 2001. She began working as an admissions counselor for the university in 1996.
___ Wayland expands in Hawaii. Wayland Baptist University's Hawaii campus recently completed a ribbon/maile leaf cutting ceremony at its expanded location. More than 100 guests visited the newly remodeled facility, which currently serves 525 students. The Hawaii campus is celebrating its 21st anniversary.
___ Texas honors Baptist woman. The Texas Youth Commission named Gloria Helleson Outstanding Volunteer of the Year at the commission's annual volunteer conference recently in San Antonio. Helleson and her husband, Jim, are central Texas regional directors of New Life Juvenile Justice Ministries of Texas, a ministry for imprisoned youth supported by Texas Baptists through the Mary Hill Davis Offering for Texas Missions. They are Mission Service Corps volunteers with the Baptist General Convention of Texas and the Southern Baptist North American Mission Board.
___ HBU receives $4.5 million. Houston Baptist University has received more than $4.5 million from the estate of Gwen Avenell Mellinger and Michele Mellinger. A large portion of the gift will establish an endowed scholarship in vocal music honoring the Mellingers' daughter, Yolande Frazier. Another portion will establish an endowed scholarship in nursing honoring their granddaughter, Halisia Cannon. The bequest is one of the largest ever received by HBU for student scholarships.
