Baylor & Baptist Standard launch
Truett Preaching Award for Texas
___The George W. Truett Preaching Award, which will recognize and encourage excellence in preaching, has been created by Baylor University and the Baptist Standard.
___The first Truett Preaching Award will be presented this fall, announced Howard Williams, Baylor's director of church relations, and Marv Knox, editor of the Baptist Standard.
___The award is named in honor of the late pastor of First Baptist Church in Dallas, widely regarded as the foremost Texas Baptist preacher of the 20th century.
___"Much of our state's great preaching tradition began at Baylor University with our students as they prepared for ministry. We want to acknowledge and affirm that great heritage," Williams said.
___ "For generations, Texas Baptists looked to Dr. Truett as the standard of excellent preaching," Knox added. "We're pleased to affirm that tradition and to recognize outstanding preachers today."
___The award contest is open to ministers who currently serve in a local church or association affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas.
___Contestants may submit only one sermon, which should be between 1,200 and 1,700 words.
___Sermons will be judged according to faithfulness to the biblical text, relevance to the contemporary context, originality, creativity and clarity.
___Deadline for submissions is Sept. 1. The winner and runners up will be selected in October and will be announced in the Standard.

___Contest judges are Raymond Bailey, pastor of Seventh & James Baptist Church in Waco and a former preaching professor at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky.; Hulitt Gloer, professor of preaching at Baylor's George W. Truett Theological Seminary in Waco; and Knox.
___Also Vicki Marsh Kabat, associate director of publications at Baylor; Margarita Trevino, a sociologist, registered nurse and president of the Christian Education and Research Institute in Keller; and John Wood, professor of theology at Baylor.
