Around the state
___ Alva Parks was awarded the Distinguished Leadership Award from the Baptist Association of Christian Educators recently. This award is presented to Southern Baptist religious educators who have made outstanding contributions to religious education through years of service and lifelong commitments as church staff or denominational
JENNA CREECH, Skyler Waldo and Weston Waldo were presented with the "God and Me" award recently at University Church of Clear Lake in Houston. She is a Brownie, and the boys are Cub Scouts. They were presented the awards by Pastor Robert Creech and Associate Pastor Jeff Waldo. The "God and Me" award program required both Bible study and service projects.
service. Parks is past president of the organization and also has served as chairman of the board of directors. He is serving another term on the board. He was executive vice president of Dallas Baptist University from 1990 until his retirement in 1996. In retirement, he continues to serve as senior adviser to the president at DBU. Before his service at DBU, he taught at Southwestern Seminary for 19 years.
___ Omer Hancock, professor of church ministry and director of in-service training at Hardin-Simmons University, was given the Outstanding Alumnus award by the Joe L. Ingram School of Christian Service at Oklahoma Baptist University.
___ Howard Payne University's Brass Choir and A Cappella Choir will conduct overseas tours this summer. The Brass Choir will perform concerts throughout South Korea. The theme of the tour is "Pillars of the Faith." The A Cappella Choir will tour in central and northwestern Spain. Both groups also will be involved in missions work.
___ Michael Fabritius, holder of the McBride Professorship in Economics, has been named the teacher of the year at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
___ Melissa Crawford, a May 2000 graduate of Truett Seminary, was one of five instructors at Temple College in Temple to be awarded a Guardian Angel Award for being outstanding in their services. She teaches both the history and literature of ancient Judaism, and early Christianity.

___Retiring
___ Ken Howard, May 31, after 30 years as minister of music at Park Lake Drive Church in Waco and 52 years in the ministry. He also served 17 years at Columbus Avenue Church in Waco. Howard's prior service included First Church in Bellmead and Immanuel Church in Waco.
___ James Watson, July 31, after more than 19 years as director of missions for Frio River Association and more than 43 years in the ministry. His prior service included time spent in Costa Rica, Mexico and Panama as an International Mission Board missionary. Before his missionary service, he was pastor of Mingus Church in Mingus, Trinity Church in Boyd and First Church in Round Rock. A reception will be held July 7 from 5 to 8 p.m. at First Church in Pearsall. Make reservations by calling (830) 334-2061. ___ Providence Church in Caldwell, 160th, June 3.
___ Crestview Church in Georgetown, 40th, July 7-8. The festivities will begin at 3 p.m. Saturday with indoor and outdoor games. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be the evening fare from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Former pastor Jarvis Philpot will preach in the 11 a.m. service Sunday, with former pastor Stuart DePew providing special music. A catered lunch and time of fellowship will follow the morning service. Reservations should be made by June 22 at (512) 863-6576. Dan Wooldridge is pastor.

___ First Church in Highlands will celebrate the 1990s June 24. Jennie Martin, a former youth leader, will be the guest speaker. A video presentation of slides from the past also will be shown. A fellowship will follow the evening service.

___Deaths
___ Gene Sewell, 76, June 2 in Wellington. Sewell was a member of Fairlanes Church in Borger and an active supporter of PanFork Encampment. He was preceded in death by his son, Chuck. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Lois; son, Don; daughter, Gayle White; brothers, Walter and David; sister, Betty Rhodes; and seven grandchildren.
___ Elwin Skiles Jr., 60, June 10 in Dallas. He is the son of Elwin Skiles, president emeritus of Hardin-Simmons University. Skiles died after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was senior vice president for public affair for Texas Instruments, and was responsible for the company's government, philanthropic and community activities. His mother, Ruth, preceded him in death. He is survived by his father; and sisters, Ann McGinty and Sarah Zachry.
