BGCT taps Evans to lead African-American work
___Michael Evans, pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Mansfield, has been named director of the Baptist General Convention of Texas office of African-American ministries.
___Currently, 696 predominantly African-American churches are affiliated with the BGCT, according to Lorenzo Peña, coordinator of the BGCT associational missions and administration section.
___Evans' responsibilities will include assisting those churches "with initiatives that bring about strategic and culturally relevant church health, church growth, evangelism and leadership development," Peña said.
___Evans has served as pastor of the 500-member Bethlehem Baptist Church of Mansfield 10 years.
___He is chairman and founder of BBC Educational Enrichment, a non-profit educational program that has served more than 300 disadvantaged youth in the Mansfield-Kennedale area.
___He has been secretary and executive board member of the BGCT Black Pastor's Advisory Council since 1996. He was a regional coordinator and conference leader for Texas Baptist black church development.
___He was a commissioned officer in the United States Navy, serving as reserve chaplain to the Navy, U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Coast Guard from 1990 to 1998.
___Evans earned a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Texas at Arlington and a master of divinity degree from Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth.
___Evans and his wife, Lisa, have two sons, Michael Jr. and Richard.
