Hispanic women's event focuses on faith anchors
___FORT WORTH--More than 600 participants found education, inspiration and fellowship at the Celebrating the Hispanic Woman conference at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary July 13-14.
___The theme for the
THE MEXICAN FLAG was just one of a host of flags from Hispanic nations included in the parade of flags that began the Celebrating the Hispanic Woman conference.
week was Hebrews 6:19: "We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure."
___Ruth Silva of Dallas and Mary Oralia Godsey of Plainview were recognized as Pioneers in the Faith. Godsey's health prevented her from being present to accept the award, but her daughter Yolanda Rodriguez accepted it in her absence.
___The conference had four primary objectives--to discuss pressing needs of Hispanic families, identify positive interventions for problem-solving, integrate a biblical base for strengthening the family and provide a network of support and encouragement.
___In addition to general sessions and breakout sessions, free blood pressure checks, diabetes checks and counseling were available.
___The conference included a prayerwalk for the first time this year, as participants gathered in the hot Texas afternoon sun at Primera Baptist Church in Fort Worth to pray for the surrounding community.
___Keynote speakers were Sandra Cisneros of Victoria and Nelida Gonzalez of South Houston. Mary Jane Berlanga, director of praise and worship at Primera Baptist Church in Fort Worth, led the music. Generacion Escojida, also from the Fort Worth church, provided dramatic interpretations of the theme.
___Next year's conference will be July 12-13 at First Baptist Church in Keller. Conference coordinator is Margarita Trevino.
