FRIENDSHIP CHURCH in Marshall passed out 600 free hot dogs and soft drinks at the Harrison County-wide 4th of July Celebration. Church members also passed out more than 400 gospel tracts that included the story of the Star Spangled Banner or the history of the American flag. Lori McWhorter, one of more 20 volunteers who worked during the 95 degree heat, is pictured serving a soft drink. Pastor Mike Midkiff said many could not believe everything was free.

___Retiring
___ Larry Putman, Aug. 5, after more than 30 years as minister of music at First Church in Belton. Putman and his wife, Velma, will be honored with a reception from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. During his tenure the choir has increased from 12 people to 170 singers. He also began a handbell program and orchestra, a monthly program for senior citizens. He also has directed the church's prayer room and homebound ministry. Putman also instituted Belton's "God and Country Concert," held the Sunday before July 4 in the Bell County Expo Center.

___ Joy Church in Gladewater will celebrate 97 years of service to its community Aug. 5 with a luncheon and a concert by Vision 4 in the afternoon. Pastor Mark Towns also will preach his final sermon before moving to a new place of service.

___Deaths
___ Monty Richards, 90, May 8 in McAllen. Richards was pastor of churches in Central and South Texas, his last pastorate being West Main Church in Alice. After his retirement, he worked 20 years as a pastor to winter Texans in mobile home parks. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Juanita; daughters, Martha Atchison, Ginger Harrington and Condy Carter; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
___ Charles Williamson, 78, July 12 in Fort Worth. Williamson was professor of voice emeritus at Southwestern Seminary. He taught in the seminary's School of Church Music for 34 years. Prior to joining the seminary, Williamson was music director at Michigan Avenue Church in Kansas City, Mo., for seven years and was an associate professor of music and voice at Central Baptist Theological Seminary for five years. Williamson was a soloist with the "Baptist Hour" radio program from 1955 to 1958. While teaching at Southwestern, he was minister of music at several churches. He is survived by his wife of more than 50 years, Helen Faye; sons, Steven, Nathan, Rod and Joseph; and six grandchildren.
___ Pearl Barker Price, 101, July 15 in Dallas. Price was a former president of the National Congress of Parents and Teachers. She joined the PTA as part of a membership drive when her daughter was in second grade. From that point, Price worked her way up to the national level of the organization, becoming president in 1969. She moved to Dallas in 1919 and joined Cliff Temple Church, where she taught Sunday School and was active in Woman's Missionary Union. In 1980, she was one of the first five women in the church's history to be ordained as deacons. At the national level, Price served on the technical assistance committee for White House conferences for child, youth, education and natural beauty from the 1950s through the 1970s. She was involved in international affairs as one of 50 Americans invited to tour the Federal Republic of Germany in 1967 to see the results of the Marshall Plan. She also was a United States representative for the General Council of the International Union of Family Organizations. Price is survived by daughters Patti Gunter of San Antonio and Laura Mahoney of Lewisville; two granddaughters; and two great-granddaughters.
___ Morris Burns, 88, July 19 in Jacksonville. Burns was pastor of churches in Mentone, Notrees, Sealy, Benavides, Marquez, Corpus Christi and Fort Worth, as well as one Oklahoma church and two in Missouri. After he retired and moved to Troup in 1979, he did interim and outreach ministries at Lake Palestine and Tyler. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Vernetta; daughters Betty Gauer, Ann Brooks, Linda Penland and Katheryn Mukai; 17 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and brother, Claude.
___ J.I. Clinton, 90, July 20 in Bridgeport. Clinton was a retired minister and director of missions. He was a member of a Texas Baptist Men mission team and a member of First Church in Bridgeport. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Anna. He remarried in 1989 and is survived by his wife, Bertha; son, Everett; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
