___ Associational event planned. A Gathering of Associational Leaders has been scheduled for Aug. 27-28 at Plymouth Park Baptist Church in Irving. The purpose of the event is to "discuss, elevate understanding and focus on the church's relationship with associations and others in the Baptist family," according to C.H. Murphy, director of missions for Tryon Evergreen Association. Four speakers are scheduled: D.L. Lowrie, pastor of First Baptist Church of Lubbock; Arnold Brown, a trends consultant from New York City; Bill Pinson, executive director emeritus of the Baptist General Convention of Texas; and Jimmy Draper, president of LifeWay Christian Resources. ___ Forrester to TBCH. Don Forrester has been named vice president of programs and services at Texas Baptist Children's Home. He comes to the agency with more than 30 years experience in children and family services and is a licensed master social worker and a licensed child care administrator. The graduate of Hardin-Simmons University previously was employed by the children's home. Most recently, he has worked in the corporate office of Buckner Children and Family Services in Dallas.
___ Ring, ring, ring. All phone and Internet service to Dallas Baptist University accidentally was cut off July 19 when a construction contractor severed phone lines. Phone service was restored the next day, but Internet service was not restored until later. Due to the problem, advance registration for the fall semester was extended one week.
___ DBU commencement set. Dallas Baptist University will award degrees to 202 students at summer commencement Aug. 3. The speaker will be graduating student Damian Haarhoff from South Africa. Also during the ceremony, Mac Brunson, pastor of First Baptist Church of Dallas, will receive an honorary doctor of divinity degree.
___ No separation. House Majority Whip Tom DeLay, R-Texas, told a meeting of conservative Christians July 10 that the notion of church-state separation is not constitutional. Speaking at a luncheon for congressional staff organized by the Center for Christian Statesmanship, DeLay asserted: "I don't believe there is a separation of church and state. I think the constitution is very clear. We have the right and the freedom to exercise our religion no matter what it is anywhere we choose to do it."
___ Smith scholarship established. Ron Smith, senior professor of theology at Hardin-Simmons University's Logsdon School of Theology, has established an endowed scholarship in memory of his parents, Aubrey and Godie Jane Smith.
