GOP divided on stem cell usage ___WASHINGTON (RNS)--Divisions within the Republican Party on stem cell research intensified July 2 when three top House Republicans told President Bush he should ban research that relies on human embryos. ___In a joint statement, Majority Leader Dick Armey and Majority Whip Tom DeLay, both of Texas, and GOP Conference Chairman J.C. Watts of Oklahoma said the U.S. government cannot create life only to destroy it for scientific research. ___Bush also is under pressure from his own party to ban the research. However, a number of Republican conservatives are urging Bush to allow the research to continue. Thirty-eight Republican House members recently urged Bush to allow the research.
