ERLC lists Disney demands
___NASHVILLE, Tenn.--A Southern Baptist Convention agency has outlined a process by which the SBC's 4-year-old boycott of the Walt Disney Co. might be called off.
___In its report to messengers attending the SBC annual meeting in New Orleans, the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission suggested the four requirements. No response has been issued by Disney officials.
___The ERLC and its president, Richard Land, have been vocal critics of Disney and advocates of the boycott. They have joined other ultra-conservative Christian groups, such as the American Family Association, in criticizing Disney for allowing so-called "Gay Days" at its theme parks and distributing certain adult-oriented movies through its subsidiary corporations.
___Although the boycott has received much press attention since it was called for by messengers to the 1997 SBC annual meeting in Dallas, there has been little evidence of rank-and-file Southern Baptists actually boycotting Disney's vast empire of media, merchandise and entertainment.
___Conditions for calling off the boycott:
___ Cease promotion of "Gay Days" at Disney theme parks.
___ Halt publication of "pro-homosexual" books.
___ Refrain from advocating the "radical homosexual agenda" through broadcast venues.
___ Establish an advisory committee of Southern Baptists and other evangelicals to provide Disney "advice and counsel" on their entertainment projects.
