Baptist Standard & Bridge unite to serve sight-impaired
___By John Hall
___Staff Writer
___DALLAS--Bridge Christian Outreach, a non-denominational ministry, is now producing weekly audiotapes of the Baptist Standard for the blind.
___The Baptist General Convention of Texas church ministries department had mailed tapes to the blind since 1981. However, BGCT and Baptist Standard officials decided the project could be run more efficiently by an outside organization.
___"The Baptist Standard has been blessed to participate in this longstanding ministry to blind and sight-impaired Baptists," said Editor Marv Knox. "They are a vital part of our fellowship of faith, and we are grateful to our partners who have made this ministry possible.
___"We could not have done this for many years without the wonderful support of the BGCT church ministries department," he added. "This effort was led by Bob Parrish, who loves both the blind and Baptist ideals. It was fulfilled by a cast of staff and volunteers who cared for our blind subscribers like extended family."
___Bridge Christian Outreach has provided books and textbooks to the blind for more than 50 years.
___Herbert Ewing, an administrator at the organization, said the Baptist Standard tapes will help reach the 541,000 blind people in Texas, of which less than 10 percent are Christians.
___The weekly tapes are provided without charge to blind and sight-impaired subscribers. The Standard assumes the $55 annual cost per audio subscription but will accept donations and gift subscriptions.
___"We want to provide the Standard on tape to all the people who need it, regardless of cost," Knox said. "If you or someone you love would benefit from a tape subscription, please let us know."
___Sight-impaired Baptists may subscribe to the Standard's audio version by calling (800) 749-4610.
___Gift subscriptions or donations to help underwrite the production and distribution costs should be sent to the Baptist Standard, Box 660267, Dallas, 75266-0267.
