THE UNIVERSITY SINGERS from East Texas Baptist University took second place in an international competition this summer in Italy, where they sang in churches and visited historic sites such as Florence and Rome.



ETBU choirs take Italy by song
___A Texas Baptist choir brought tears to the eyes of parishioners in a prominent Catholic church in Rome this summer.
___The Concert Choir of East Texas Baptist University sang during evening mass at Santa Maria Maggiore, one of four churches in Rome directly owned by the Vatican.

Baptist choir in their service, especially when the students' voices began lifting to the lofty heights of the centuries-old cathedral," said Christy Cornelius, associate director of public relations for the university. "Several parishioners were moved to tears, and many gathered at the end of the service to applaud and thank the students."
___The ETBU Concert Choir and University Singers performed in a number of churches across Italy during a two-week tour in late June and early July. Their ultimate destination was an international choral festival in the northern town of Gorizia.
___Although the ETBU choirs were the only groups invited to the festival from the United States, they placed well in the competition. The Concert Choir placed fourth and fifth in its competitive events. The University Singers placed second in its competition.
___During their two-week journey, the Texas students toured the Sistine Chapel, saw Michelangelo's statues of Moses and David, and visited the Tower of Pisa and other historic sites.
